Smithing

Smelt ore into ingots and craft metal equipment. Depending on the metal tier, you can craft armor, weapons, gathering tools, rings, and arrowheads.

That's because you need the specialized Smithing skill to work metal. You have to melt the ore down in intense heat and hammer it into shape.
